Meet Mushu!
Mushu is our oldest goat here on the farm. He was born on March 26, 2017 and he arrived here in May of 2017. Mushu is a Nubian wether (castrated male goat). I bought Mushu as a bottle baby when I was 15 from a farm up in Naples, ME and instantly fell in love with his spots. Mushu has taught me so much about what it means to care for goats, what they need and how fulfilling raising these animals can be. When he was smaller, I used to take him almost everywhere with me. He has been to the memorial day parades here in North Hampton, the Seacoast School of Technology in Exeter, and walks around the road and in the woods. Nowadays, he’s too big to fit into the truck (he weighs just over 225lbs!) but he’s more than happy to keep the younger kids in line and receive his daily hugs and treats.
By far are most relaxed goat in the herd, he is more interested in getting a treat and some cuddles than doing just about anything else. Mushu is typically not the goat to come up to you, but often waits for you to make your way over to him. Since bringing home Mushu, I have brought home a lot of other animals and he has always been the best at helping the young ones integrate into the herd. He keeps some of the rowdier animals from taking it too far with the kids, making him such an essential part of my herd.
I get asked a lot why I’ve kept Mushu and some of my other wethers around if my main goal with the herd is to produce meat goats. I was nervous getting into goats because I didn’t have a goat mentor to teach me, I learned a lot through trial and error. I thought, “if I can raise a couple of wethers, then I can definitely learn and be confident in raising breeding does.” Which has proven true. Those animals brought me to where I am today, so they’re stuck with me for life.
