Understanding the Breed: NUBIAN

Nubian or Anglo-Nubian goats are of British origin. The breed was developed by crossing British does with bucks from Africa and India. Nubians were first imported to the US in the early 1900’s. As more goats were imported to the US it helped to develop the breed to what we see today.

Nubians are easily recognized by their long floppy ears, roman nose and tall frame. This breed can be found in a wide variety of colors including black, tan, chestnut and can have many different patterns. In fact, a few of our Nubians have small moonspots throughout their coats. Some Nubians have white facial stripes which could indicate crossbreeding with goat breeds of Swiss origin somewhere in their lineage.

Nubians are considered to be one of the loudest breeds. They are incredibly vocal, especially when does are in heat or it’s feeding time. I have found this to be true, but they are relatively quiet for most of the day. Despite their intimidating size, (bucks can weigh between 175lbs and 300lbs, and does between 175lbs and 250lbs), they are an incredibly friendly and a relatively low maintenance breed.

Although Nubians are considered dual purpose, they are best know for their dairy production. They don’t produce a whole lot of milk, but their milk has a high butter fat content, around 4-5%. In addition, the breeding season of Nubians is much longer than that of other breeds so it’s possible for them to produce milk year round, which can be a key selling point for those wanting fresh milk year round for a family.

As one of the most popular breeds of goat in the US, Nubians are easy to find if in the market. This is extremely helpful when looking to add some genetic diversity to your herd during the breeding season. Regardless if you are looking for a milking goat, pet or yard control, the Nubian can be a great option, especially if you don’t mind the noise!
